U.S. state department map mislabels every country in Africa at int'l conference

A U.S. government map mislabeled every country in Africa during a State Department presentation at the AIDS 2026 conference in Brazil.

Attendees quickly shared screenshots online, drawing criticism of the U.S. delegation. 

In a statement on Thursday, the department blamed a last-minute change to the slides and took "full responsibility."

The error comes as the U.S. cuts foreign aid and scales back its global HIV programs, raising fears of a resurgence in infections.
